Lada Vesta weak points: what to check when buying used

Short answerOn a used Vesta first find out which engine it has. The Lada engines (1.6 and 1.8) have a timing belt: ask when it was replaced, and know that on engines built before late 2018 a snapped belt bends the valves. The Renault-Nissan 1.6 (H4M) has a chain. On the 1.8, check the oil use. On the drive, the robotised manual (AMT) should not jerk or slip and the CVT should not judder. Then look for rust on the sills and door bottoms and listen for rattles in the cabin.

Updated

Which Vesta you are looking at

The Vesta has been built since 2015 as a sedan, and later as the SW estate and the SW Cross; the updated Vesta NG went on sale in 2023. The engines: the Lada 1.6 16-valve (VAZ-21129), the Lada 1.8 (VAZ-21179), the Renault-Nissan 1.6 (H4M) with a CVT in 2019–2022, and on the Vesta NG also an 8-valve Lada 1.6 (VAZ-11182). The gearboxes: a five-speed manual, a robotised manual (AMT) on earlier cars and a CVT. Different 1.6 engines were sold in the same years, so check the engine code in the papers or on the engine itself: their weak points differ.

Engine: what to check

  • Lada 1.6 (VAZ-21129; the 8-valve VAZ-11182 on the Vesta NG): a timing belt with a replacement interval. On engines built before mid-August 2018 a snapped belt bends the valves; later ones have pistons with recesses and do not, but the car still stops. Ask for proof of the last change; without it, price in a new belt, rollers and pump. Listen for a whistle from the belt area and look for oil leaks around the valve cover.
  • Lada 1.8 (VAZ-21179): early engines were known for using oil; the maker changed parts later. Check the dipstick, ask how much oil the car takes between services and look for blue smoke. It has a timing belt too: on engines built before the end of 2018 a snapped belt bends the valves.
  • Renault-Nissan 1.6 (H4M): a timing chain; listen for a rattle at a cold start on high-mileage cars, and check for oil use.
  • Cold start: see Cold start: what to listen for and look at.

Gearbox

  • Robotised manual (AMT): it is a manual gearbox with an electric actuator, not an automatic. Pauses and nods between gears are normal for it; harsh jerks, a slipping clutch, a smell of a burnt clutch and failures to engage a gear are not. Ask when the clutch was replaced and whether the software was updated.
  • CVT (with the H4M and on later cars): move off gently several times; judder, a whine or revs climbing without speed mean wear. Ask when its fluid was changed: owners often follow the long official interval, and a shorter one is kinder to the gearbox.
  • Manual: gears should engage without grinding; the clutch should not slip or judder.

Body, suspension and interior

  • Rust: the Vesta lives with winter road salt. Look at the sills, the bottom of the doors and the tailgate, the wheel arches and the underbody, and lift the boot floor.
  • Accident repairs: check the paint thickness and the panel gaps; see How to check a car’s paint and accident damage.
  • Suspension: knocks over bumps and uneven tyre wear on a rough-road car; price the parts in.
  • Interior: squeaks and rattles from the trim are a common complaint; check that every window, the heater, the air conditioning and the multimedia work.
  • Taxi use: the Vesta is a common taxi; compare the wear of the seats and the steering wheel with the odometer.

Before you pay

Check the car’s registration document and VIN against the body plate, and ask a Lada dealer about open recalls and warranty work. Do the whole inspection from How to check a used car before you buy it and the drive from the used car test drive checklist. Use what you find to negotiate: a belt with no record or a tired clutch is a known cost.

Quick questions

Which Vesta engine is the safest used buy?

Each one has its weak point: the Lada engines their belt (and, on early ones, bent valves if it snaps), the early 1.8 its oil use, the H4M its chain and CVT. A car with records of the belt, oil and gearbox service is the safe one.

Is the AMT a reason not to buy?

Not if it works without harsh jerks or slipping. It is slower than an automatic; drive it in traffic and on a hill before deciding.

How do I tell which 1.6 engine the car has?

Look at the engine code in the registration papers or on the engine. The Lada engines have a timing belt cover; the H4M has a chain and was sold with a CVT in 2019–2022.
